Ford hits treble back in '53.
12th September 1953
Sunderland 7 Arsenal 1
A hat-trick from Trevor Ford earned Bill Murray’s Lads a 7-1 victory over Arsenal in front of 59,784 at Roker Park.
The Gunners were the reigning champions and took the lead through Doug Lishman after 26 minutes.
However, Sunderland were in the mood to delight a packed Roker crowd and equalised ten minutes later as Len Shackleton squared for Ford to grab his first.
Billy Elliott was making his home debut for the Lads and he gave Sunderland the lead on the stroke of half time, finishing neatly after good interplay from Stan Anderson and Billy Bingham.
Shackleton added a third not long after the break before Ford put the game to bed with his second on the hour.
Tommy Wright, who was in the middle of a seven-match run of scoring in every game, scored twice in five minutes to give Sunderland a 6-1 lead.
And, Ford piled the misery on the Gunners, grabbing his hat-trick from Bingham’s cross in the closing stages.
