Quinn announces retirement as Phillips sparks win in '02.
Goals from Kevin Phillips and Tore Andre Flo earned Howard Wilkinson his first win as Sunderland boss.
Niall Quinn announced his retirement at half-time in front of 40,024 at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats moved out of the relegation zone.
The 36-year-old cited a long-term back problem as the reason for bringing his retirement forward from the end of the season.
Sunderland got the breakthrough on the hour when Michael Proctor, who was making his Premier League debut, found Michael Gray and his cross was headed in by Phillips.
Two minutes later, the Black Cats found themselves two in front when Phillips sent a lovely ball over the top for Flo and the striker held off Chris Perry before firing past Kasey Keller from a tight angle.
