2006 – Trinidad and Tobago trio Dwight Yorke, Stern John and Carlos Edwards appeared for their country in the Caribbean side’s first ever game at a World Cup finals. The Soca Warriors drew 0-0 with Sweden in Dortmund.

2005 – Nyron Nosworthy joined Sunderland from Gillingham; the defender went on to make 125 appearances for the Black Cats in a spell that lasted seven years.

1982 – Tom Ritchie left Sunderland for Bristol City after less than two seasons on Wearside.

1933 – England international Colin Grainger was born in Havercroft, Wakefield. The outside left scored 14 goals in 124 games for Sunderland between 1956 and 1960.
