Phillips leads the way in away rout.

18th September 1999

A Kevin Phillips hat-trick sent Sunderland to third in the Premiership as Peter Reid’s Black Cats continued their fine start to the 1999-00 campaign with a 5-0 win over Derby County at Pride Park.

Gavin McCann opened the scoring for the Wearsiders whilst Niall Quinn added the visitors’ fourth goal before Phillips rounded off the afternoon with his third and Sunderland’s fifth.

The Black Cats were ahead on 24 minutes as McCann fired home after Nicky Summerbee’s cross caused panic in the Rams’ defence.

Phillips grabbed his first of the afternoon three minutes before half-time as Michael Gray found space behind Derby’s defence and pulled back for Phillips to grab his sixth goal of the season.

And the Sunderland striker scored his second just seven minutes after the restart; Gray was again the provider as Phillips pounced on poor County defending.

Quinn then added a fourth just prior to the hour mark as Gray again provided the cross, which Russell Hoult failed to deal with, before the Republic of Ireland international nodded home.

Phillips’ third came as the Black Cats exerted their dominance in one of their finest performances of the campaign; Alex Rae broke from midfield before releasing Phillips who slotted past Hoult.
