Greatest Away Days: Newcastle 0 Sunderland 3

by Ashley Houghton

Our series continues with superb win on Tyneside.

14th April 2013

This Tyne-Wear derby will probably be as fresh in people’s minds in 50 years’ time as it is today.

The game was Paolo Di Canio’s second in charge of the Black Cats after a narrow defeat at Chelsea in his first.

And the Italian head coach, as ever, instilled a box office impact on the game as Stephane Sessegnon, Adam Johnson and David Vaughan all struck to give the former Swindon boss his first win since taking over from Martin O’Neill at the beginning of the month.

The Sunderland fans were electric from the off and, in all fairness, they added to the noise the Magpies’ fans were creating until the Tynesiders were stunned into silence as Sessegnon picked up Jonas Gutierrez's loose ball, drove at the Newcastle defence and squeezed a shot past Tim Krul.

It was the first of the many Di Canio celebrations the Black Cats fans have become accustomed to as the Italian ensured Barclays Premier League football on Wearside for a seventh consecutive season.

Sunderland’s Belgian ‘keeper Simon Mignolet twice produced fine saves, further highlighting why he was chosen as North-East Football Writers’ Player of the Year, to deny Papiss Cisse.

The visitors could have gone further ahead before the break when Carlos Cuellar climbed highest to head Sebastian Larsson's corner towards goal, but Krul made an assured save.

Another memorable moment was to follow as Johnson curled a delightful second in for the Black Cats as Di Canio slid on his knees in celebration.

Substitute Vaughan hit the sweetest strike of the afternoon as his left-footed drive sailed into the top corner leaving substitute goalkeeper Rob Elliot with no chance.

The Sunderland fans sang until, and after, the final whistle as their side won their first game at St James’ Park since 2000.

Sunderland: Mignolet, Bardsley (Colback, 54), O’Shea, Cuellar (Mangane, 72), Rose, N’Diaye, Larsson, Johnson, McClean (Vaughan, 65), Sessegnon, Graham.

Subs not used: Westwood, Kilgallon, Mandron, Laidler.
