2004 – The first game to be postponed at the Stadium of Light; v Preston North End due to a water-logged pitch.

2001 – Michael Gray and Alex Rae were sent off, along with Andy Cole, in a home defeat to Manchester United. This televised game was a clash of first place v second placed and it was the Black Cats’ first home defeat of the season.

1949 – Ivor Broadis became the first manager to transfer himself when as player manager of Carlisle United he moved to Sunderland for £19,000.
