1934 - Stan Anderson was born in Horden; he went on to make more than 400 appearances for Sunderland.

1999 - The first ever pay per view televised game saw Sunderland draw 0-0 with Oxford United.

1982 - Barry Siddall, Alan Brown and John McGinley all played their final games for the club in a 1-1 draw with Notts County.

1973 - Vic Halom netted a stunning strike as Sunderland beat Manchester City 3-1  in an FA Cup fifth round replay.
