Tommy Smith was SAFC's FA Cup hero back in 2004.

2004 – Two extra time goals from Tommy Smith secured a fifth round FA Cup replay victory at Birmingham City. The win set up a game with Sheffield United, which Smith once again scored the winner in to send Sunderland to the semi-final to play Milwall at Old Trafford. 

1961 – John Goodchild scored a first half hat-trick in his only appearance during that season; a 4-2 victory at Leeds United.

1950 – A first half Len Shackleton goal secured all three points against Blackpool. The win saw Sunderland move to third position in the top flight.
