Game of the Day: SAFC 4 - 1 Chelsea

Quinn and Phillips give Chelsea the Blues on their first visit to SoL.

4th December 1999

Two goals each for strikers Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn erased memories of Sunderland's opening day defeat at Chelsea as the Black Cats cruised past Gianluca Vialli's side in their first-ever visit to the Stadium of Light in 1999.

Peter Reid's men had a baptism of fire on their return to the top-flight with a 4-0 rout at Stamford Bridge to welcome them back to the Premier League,

Five months later the Lads gave the London side the blues, scoring four goals in a whirlwind opening 45 minutes.

Quinn opened the scoring within 44 seconds of the kick-off with a fine through-ball from midfielder Eric Roy, before partner Phillips fired home a brace.

The first of the England international's goals was a sure contender for goal of the season, as he struck a breath-taking ball from 25 yards out and curled it over keeper Ed De Goey's head, cue the now infamous knee-slide celebration!

The Irishman went on to complete his double within minutes of the break following a pin-point fre kick from Nicky Summerbee, as the strike force tortured Chelsea's defence in a display which had the home fans on their feet throughout.

Gustavo Poyet pulled one back for the visitors in an improved but still unimpressive second half, but that proved little consolation on a day the Blues will be happy to forget.

Reid's side soaked up what pressure the Londoners could mount, but they were rarely in any danger.

Tore Andre Flo should have reduced the deficit for the visitors late in the game but the striker's first touch was poor and Thomas Sorensen came from his line to make his first real save of the match.

The victory took Sunderland to fourth in the league on 34 points, just two points off Manchester Unite who were sitting in the top spot - a great achievement after for a newly promoted side after playing 17 top-flight games.
