Chopra’s stoppage time winner secures dream start to the season.
11th August 2007
Michael Chopra’s 92nd-minute debut goal secured a perfect start to the 2007-08 season for the Black Cats.
The striker slotted Ross Wallace’s cross home from ten yards sending the Black Cats faithful wild on their return to the top flight.
Chopra was one of five Sunderland debutants as the Black Cats went to the top of the Barclays Premier League for a few hours of the opening weekend.
Craig Gordon, Britain’s most expensive goalkeeper, Paul McShane, Dickson Etuhu and Kieran Richardson also made their first appearances, with McShane and Etuhu particularly impressing.
McShane was solid at the back and Etuhu bossed the midfield - his performance deserved a goal.
And three home points were secured in dramatic fashion when Chopra popped up in stoppage time.
Sunderland: Gordon, Whitehead, Nosworthy, McShane, Wallace, Edwards, Etuhu, Yorke (Miller, 57), Richardson (Chopra, 72), Murphy, Stokes (Collins, 72).
Subs not used: Ward, Connolly.
