1997 – Goals either side of half time from Kevin Phillips and Allan Johnston sealed a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light against West Bromwich Albion.

1980 – John Hawley picked up a loose ball and thundered a 35-yard first time shot past Arsenal keeper Pat Jennings to open the scoring in Sunderland’s 2-0 home win.

1978 – Former Sunderland player Billy Elliott was appointed Black Cats manager for the second time.

1975 – Gary Rowell made his Black Cats debut as substitute for Mel Holden in a 1-0 home victory over Oxford United.
