1998 – First half goals from Martin Smith and Paul Butler gave the Lads a 2-0 home victory over Port Vale.

1948 – Former Sunderland and England defender Colin Todd was born in Chester-Le-Street.

1914 – Sunderland beat Burnley 2-1 in front of the lowest ever first-team crowd at Roker Park as only 2,000 fans showed up for the match.

1891 – Sunderland won 7-0 at home to Darwen and would later go on to beat them 7-1 away in doing so they recorded their highest ever aggregate score against a team in one season.
