1991 – Centre forward Don Goodman was signed from West Bromwich Albion for a club record fee of £900,000. However he was cup-tied having played for the Baggies in the first round and thus missed the run to the 1991 FA Cup final.

1984 – Goals from Clive Walker and Gordon Chisholm, along with a late penalty save by Chris Turner, ensured the Black Cats a 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane in a League Cup fourth round replay.

1908 – The Lads scored eight times in 28 minutes at Newcastle United to record a record 9-1 away victory. Billy Hogg and George Holley both grabbed hat-tricks.
