A look back on this day in the club's history.

2003 – Stewart Downing converted a penalty and Julio Arca was sent off in a 1-1 draw at home to Wigan Athletic in front of 22,167 at the Stadium of Light – the lowest ever league crowd at the SoL.

1978 – Wayne Entwistle scored his only hat-trick for the Lads in a 5-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers.

1933 – Patsy Gallacher achieved his second hat-trick of the season in a 4-0 win at Middlesbrough.

1919 – Birth of Cliff Whitelum in Farnworth, Lancashire. His best years coincided with WW2 during which time he scored over 100 goals for the club.
