Bobby Kerr makes final Sunderland appearance.

2002 – Tore Andre Flo and Marcus Stewart both joined the Black Cats from Glasgow Rangers and Ipswich Town respectively.

1978 – Bobby Kerr, Sunderland’s 1973 FA Cup-winning captain, made his final bow for Sunderland in a 2-0 home defeat to Stoke City.

1958 – Sunderland picked up their first points outside of the top flight with a 2-1 home victory over Liverpool.

1919 – Charlie Buchan scored the first goal for Sunderland on the resumption of league football after WWI. The 2-1 win over Aston Villa was also the Black Cats’ first ever game to be played in August.
