1993 – Sunderland suffered their worst start to a season with a 5-0 defeat at Derby County. This was the first league match in which clubs were allowed to name three substitutes whilst it was also Alec Chamberlain’s debut.

1971 – Left-back Bobby Park suffered a broken leg in a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in front of Roker Park’s lowest opening-day crowd of 9,749.
