Gates joins up whilst Black Cats lift Isle of Man trophy

2003 – Sunderland kicked off their season at 5:35pm in a televised game at Nottingham Forest. On record, this was the hottest conditions in which the Black Cats have played a home game with pitch-side temperature at 39 degrees.

1985 – Former England international Eric Gates signed from Ipswich Town for £150,000.

1983 – Sunderland beat St. Mirren 1-0 in the final of the pre-season Isle of Man trophy tournament.

1975 – Centre forward Mel Holden made his debut in the first Anglo-Scottish Cup tie to be played at Roker Park. The game, in front of 12,673 spectators, ended in a 1-0 win for Carlisle United.
