2011 – A late Paul Scharner goal sealed all three points for West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light, cancelling out a Nick Shorey own goal and Phil Bardsley bullet.

2007 – Goals from Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards at St Mary’s saw Sunderland pick up a vital win over Southampton as Roy Keane’s men ramped up their promotion push.

2005 – Brian Deane became Sunderland’s oldest debutant, aged 37 years and 58 days, when he appeared as a sub against Reading at the SoL.

1859 – Sunderland’s first-ever manager, Tom Watson, was born in Heaton, Newcastle.
