Gray and Russell on target, Gates secures promotion.

1994 – Two goals from Phil Gray, as well as a Craig Russell strike, secured a 3-2 victory over Tranmere Rovers at Roker Park.

1988 – Eric Gates scored the only goal as the Black Cats secured promotion to Division Two with a win over Port Vale at Vale Park.

1973 – Trevor Swinburne made his Sunderland debut as Bob Stokoe rested both Ian Porterfield and Dennis Tueart in a 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient. It was the Black Cats’ eighth game in 20 days as the fixture backlog from the FA Cup run began to take its toll.

1913 – Champions Sunderland set a new top flight points record with a final day home win over Bradford City. Charlie Buchan’s 30th goal of the season was enough for a Black Cats side who had failed to win in their first seven games of the campaign.
