Quinn secures first win as manager.
Sunderland 2 West Bromwich Albion 0
28th August 2006
Niall Quinn won his final game as Sunderland manager in front of prospective new boss Roy Keane at the Stadium of Light.
Goals from Dean Whitehead and Neill Collins earned the Black Cats their first win of the campaign, ending West Brom’s unbeaten start in the process.
The home side's dominance was rewarded on the half hour; Whitehead's corner was missed by keeper Pascal Zuberbuhler and crossed the line before being cleared - however, the goal was given.
Collins extended the Black Cats’ lead after just two minutes of the second half, heading Whitehead’s corner beyond Zuberbuhler and into the corner of the net.
Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips returned to Wearside but he couldn’t inspire a late Baggies fight-back.
John Hartson headed wide late on for the visitors but Sunderland easily held on for their first win of the season.
