4th March 2005

Sunderland moved to the top of the Championship after beating ten-man Burnley at Turf Moor.

Liam Lawrence sent Mick McCarthy’s side on their way to their first away win in three as he scored the opener on the half-hour; heading home after a Sean Thornton corner found its way to Marcus Stewart at the back of the box.

Lawrence, making his first start for five weeks after a knee injury, was on target from close range after the veteran's powerful shot ricocheted off Peter Whittingham and Micah Hyde.

Jeff Whitley went close to doubling the visitors’ advantage ten minutes from time but his curling shot was well saved by Brian Jensen.

Burnley substitute Ade Akinbiyi was dismissed for violent conduct just two minutes into his Clarets debut for elbowing and attempting to headbutt George McCartney.

Stewart sealed the win with a close-range shot to extend the Black Cats winning run to three whilst also ending Burnley’s playoff hopes.
