safc.com takes a look at what happened on this day in the club's history.
1887 – Sunderland wear red and white stripes for the first time in a 1-0 victory over Darlington St. Augustine's at Newcastle Road, near to where the Stadium of Light stands now.
1996 – An early Martin Scott goal gave Sunderland a League Cup victory over Watford at Roker Park.
Full-back Scott spent four years on Wearside, making over 100 appearances.
During that time he was no stranger to having his name on the score sheet, notching nine goals for the Black Cats.
