1891 – Hugh Wilson scores Sunderland's first penalty in the Football League in a 4-3 away defeat to Bolton Wanderers.
1973 – Sunderland play their first match in European competition, beating Vasas Bucharest 2-0 in Romania in the Cup Winners Cup First Round First Leg.
