1994 – The only Sunderland born player to lift the FA Cup, Raich Carter passed away aged 80.
1990 – Sunderland sealed a 6-1 League Cup victory over Bristol City.
1954 – Roker Park’s second highest crowd of 66,654 watched Sunderland beat Newcastle 4-2 to go top of Division One.
1943 – FA Cup winning legend Jimmy Montgomery was born in Sunderland. The goalkeeper wrote his name in Wearside folklore after his double-save at Wembley in the victory over Leeds United.
