On this day...

by Kate Smith travels back in time to find out what has happened on this day in Sunderland's history.

- There was late heartbreak for Sunderland as a late own goal from Anton Ferdinand rescued a point for Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Darren Bent had given the Black Cats a sensational lead inside the first 10 minutes but Dimitar Berbatov equalised soon after the break. Kenwyne Jones headed home his fifth goal of the season to put the visitors back in front before a wayward shot from Patrice Evra struck the grounded Ferdinand and flew in with just seconds left.

1998 – With Kevin Phillips missing Sunderland couldn’t find their shooting boots when Bradford City visited the Stadium of Light. Despite winning seven corners in the game, Peter Reid’s side played out a goalless draw.

1979 – Pop Robson scored the winner in a 1-0 league cup third round replay victory over Manchester City at Roker Park.

1973 – Roker Park staged its first European Cup Winners’ Cup tie. Dennis Tueart scored from the spot in the 1-0 first round second leg game against Vasas Budapest.

1948 – 1973 FA Cup winning centre forward Vic Halom is born in Coton Park near Burton-on-Trent.
