1991 – Republic of Ireland striker John Byrne joined Sunderland from Brighton & Hove Albion for £225,000

1984 - Goalkeeper Kieren Westwood was born in Manchester 

1962 – Northern Irish international forward John Crossan was signed from Belgian side Standard Liege for £26,700

1897 – The Newcastle Road ground had its largest attendance, estimated at 22,000 for a goalless draw with Aston Villa.
