2004 – Sunderland’s home game with Milwall was settled by a Kevin Muscat own goal. The victory was made all the more sweeter in the Black Cats' promotion-winning campaign after Millwall had defeated Mick McCarthy’s side in the FA Cup semi-final the previous season.
1976 – Bob Stokoe stood down as Sunderland manager due to ill health following a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa. Assistant manager Ian McFarlane assumed in caretaker role for the next seven games.
1965 – Defender Martin Harvey took over in goal for the injured Jimmy Montgomery in a game against Nottingham Forest. Sunderland managed to hold onto their 3-2 lead for the final seven minutes of the game.
1909 – England international George Holley scored a hat-trick in Sunderland’s 6-2 home victory over Arsenal.
