1985: A brace from centre forward David Swindlehurst gave Sunderland a 2-1 home win in their first ever game against Wimbledon.

1956: Inside forward Don Revie signed from Manchester City for £24,000

1946: Cliff Whitelum, Len Duns and Jackie Robinson scored in a 3-0 win in Sunderland's first visit to Ayresome Park following World War 2.

1935: Preston North End were beaten 4-2 at Roker Park putting Sunderland at the top of Division One they remained there for the rest of the season and claimed their sixth, and so far, last top flight Championship.
