1998: The Black Cats continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 home victory over Grimsby Town.
1979: Sunderland lost 2-0 in their Centenary game against an England XI at Roker Park, Everton striker Bob Latchford scored both of the goals for England.
1973: Sunderland's participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup ended with a 2-0 defeat, 3-2 on aggregate, in the second round second leg at Sporting Lisbon in front of 50,000 spectators.
1919: 'Team of all the Talents' Scottish goalkeeper Teddy Doig (pictured) passed away, aged 53.
