Smith Says...

'Son of Pele' returns with latest column.

Welcome back – I hope Sunderland fans everywhere had a great Christmas and you certainly can't argue with a return of two points per game over the festive period.

It's been a tough period but a good one with the two wins and now we can head to Liverpool looking for a good start to 2013.

I think the Spurs game was the toughest one. With the likes of Bale and Lennon in the side they have so much pace and it was a tough ask on the back of what we did against City.

A couple of wins have shot us up the league and we performed well against Spurs – now we have to build on it and keep getting those points.

We were always going to come out and have a real go but Spurs have some great quality in their side.

If we could have held on a little longer and took the wind out of their sails then the result might have been different, but the equaliser came at the right time for them.

The second goal came quickly too and then we were up against it.

Simon [Mignolet] made a few good saves and Spurs can pick you off with their pace.

Now we look ahead to the start of 2013 and a difficult trip to face a Liverpool side who had a great result at QPR in their last game.

Anfield is never an easy place to play but there's no reason why we can't go there with confidence.

Liverpool have two huge players in Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez and it's important we try to keep them quiet.

If we can do that we've half a chance, but that's easier said than done when you look at the form Suarez is in.

Hopefully we can get 2013 off to a good start with the cup game coming up as well. If we can get a couple of early wins in the New Year then who knows where it could take us?
