1981 - Barry Venison came off the bench with Sunderland 2-1 down at Manchester City and changed the game. He immediately set up Gary Rowell's equaliser eight minutes from time and then won the game himself, firing home his first goal for the club from 20 yards.

1961 - Former Sunderland manager John Cochrane died at the age of 70.

1914 - Spurs travelled to Wearside to face Sunderland at Roker Park and returned to London on the wrong end of a 6-0 thrashing.

1901 - The club's record single-season goalscorer, David Halliday, was born in Dumfries.
