Club historian Rob Mason pays tribute…

We were saddened to learn of the death of former Sunderland forward Gary Moore who has passed away at the age of 76. An England youth international, Gary was from South Hetton and came through the youth system at Sunderland, debuting in a top-flight match at Wolves in April 1965. He went on to play 14 times for Sunderland scoring against West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.

He went on to play for Grimsby Town, Southend United, Colchester United, Chester and Swansea City in a career that totalled 337+28 appearances and 96 goals. Over half of those games and goals came during his time with Southend where he later ran a sports shop and did scouting work. Gary later retired to Sunderland, lived in Ashbrooke and was a member of the Former Players’ Association.
