1879: Sunderland duo go back to school

Sunderland AFC players Jason Denayer and Billy Jones took part in a history lesson at a local school yesterday as part of the club’s community work in the region.

St. James’ school in Hebburn, who work closely with the club’s charity the Foundation of Light, were rewarded with a visit from Denayer and Jones as the two players and club mascots Samson and Delilah, took part in various Victorian based games and a Q&A session.

Sunderland AFC was created by a small group of teachers in 1879 and the children took the opportunity to dress up in clothes reminiscent of the time the club was founded.

Defender Jason Denayer said: “It’s great to put a smile on the faces of the young children and I have had lots of fun. It’s important to connect with all our fans and hopefully it is something that they can go away and remember – but also be inspired by as well.

“We’ll need everyone behind us this season and the fans have been amazing, so it’s nice to be able to reward our young fans and come out in to the community and meet them as well.”
