SAFC in the community: Q&A with Papy and Pienaar

Sunderland AFC continues to support North East-based inclusion group, Show Racism the Red Card, as the club hosted pupils from schools across the city.

Established in 1996, Show Racism the Red Card has delivered anti-racism workshops to hundreds of thousands of young people since its inception and its vital work uses the power of football to help educate and empower young people on the issue of inclusion.

In attendance at the workshop at the Stadium of Light was Sunderland AFC players, Papy Djilobodji and Steven Pienaar.

Speaking at the event, Steven Pienaar said: "It is important for the club to support and tackle the issue of racism in football. We need to help educate young people to promote inclusion in the game and help break down the barriers not just in football but across society.

“Show Racism the Red Card deserve a lot of recognition for the role they have played for over two decades in helping to create a more tolerant and inclusive environment and I am proud to play a part in that.”

Speaking about the event and the continuing partnership, Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card, said “Sunderland AFC and the Foundation of Light have supported Show Racism the Red Card throughout its 20-year history and our annual event has become one of the highlights of the year. It’s great to know that the club are still right behind the message we are trying to present to as many young people as possible – that there is no place for racism in society or sport.”

Sunderland AFC’s star striker Jermain Defoe and SAFC Ladies manager, Carlton Fairweather, are among Show Racism the Red Card’s football ambassadors and both continue to support the organisation in its campaigning.
