Digital: Club forging ahead online

Sunderland AFC’s digital presence is continuing to grow on all fronts.

The club’s digital reach, including social, grew by more than two-thirds over the course of last season.

The progress builds on the 2015 Facebook Club Performance of the Year Award for the biggest percentage increase on the platform amongst Premier League clubs.

Digital organisation RESULT Sports ranked the club 8th in average percentage social growth in Europe across their tracked categories (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope, Google+ and YouTube).

The club also launched a new website back in June and broadcast all six of their pre-season games live, completely free of charge.

Content produced on pre-season, including behind-the-scenes coverage, was watched in more than 160 countries and territories around the world.

Commercial director Gary Hutchinson said: “Digital is of vital strategic importance for modern football clubs.

“We are continually focused on achieving excellence in our digital activities and have plenty of exciting plans in the works.”

As part of the plans, the club are looking to set up digital focus groups both locally and further afield, working in conjunction with official supporters’ branches.
