Benali's big race: Bally greets Benali at the SoL

Francis Benali arrived at the Stadium of Light last Saturday as part of his mammoth 1,400-mile journey in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The former Southampton defender visited Wearside as he ticked off the 19th ground on his 44 stadium round trip in an intense two weeks.

Once a tough-tackling and ferocious competitor, Benali has braved all weather conditions as he aims to complete a marathon by foot and then cycle a further 75 miles each day for two weeks via every Premier League and Championship ground.

“There are going to be some horrible hills still to come and I have got a few niggles but it was great to arrive at the Stadium of Light,” Benali said.

“It’s not easy but I have got my family with me and I’m enjoying every second of the challenge, it’s just a case of grinding the miles out now till I arrive back in Southampton.

“We have received some tremendous support and I’m delighted by the money we have raised. This challenge has been mentally challenging so in that sense I knew what lied ahead.”

Sunderland AFC ambassador Kevin Ball added: “It’s beyond incredible to actually describe what Francis is doing.

“To cycle and run marathon after marathon around the country in two weeks is unbelievable. I wish I could be down at St Mary’s next weekend to watch Francis arrive there, that would be awesome.

“On behalf of the club though it is a great cause and I urge people to raise money for him.”
