Foundation of Light: FoL host UV tournament

Female footballers from across the north of England lit up a glow in the dark football tournament held by Foundation of Light.

Sunderland AFC's registered charity welcomed teams representing Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday to Monkwearmouth Academy to compete in the first Regional Premier League UV Football Tournament on Saturday.

The teams, who are part of each clubs' Premier League Girls programme, donned face paint and neon bibs for the special event which saw St Bedes Catholic Comprehensive School representing SAFC in the U16s group and Kings Academy from Middlesbrough (U14s) crowned inaugural champions.

Helen Byrne, Foundation of Light's Premier League 4 Sport and Girls Coordinator at Foundation of Light, said: "UV football is great fun and we are proud to host the country's first Premier League Girls UV Tournament.

"Some of the teams who competed today will never have played the game in this way before, and it has been a fantastic experience for their players to try something a bit different.

"We've seen how popular and exciting UV football has become through our own programmes and are always keen to embrace innovative ways of encouraging youngsters to take up sport."

Earlier this year the Foundation held the North East's first UV Football Festival and has successfully introduced the innovative experience throughout its sports programmes, including Little Dribblers and School of Dance.

Through its Premier League Girls and Evening and Weekend programmes, Foundation of Light provides opportunities for female footballers to progress to the Sunderland Regional Talent Club as well as developing coaches of the future through qualifications and work placements.
