Club news: Food banks open till Monday

Sunderland AFC fans this week donated hundreds of items as part of the club’s Foodbank initiative to help charity Centrepoint provide for homeless youngsters this Christmas.

A large number of tins, as well as pasta and rice packets and other non-perishable items were delivered to the Stadium of Light fan zone before the Chelsea game on Wednesday evening.

Club staff will on Monday evening collate all the items generated from the appeal and are hoping to give the youngsters 100 boxes of food goods as they distribute it to a number of Centrepoint’s offices across the city next week.

Sunderland AFC Chief Executive, Martin Bain, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response so far from fans who have got behind this. But we kindly ask that on your way to the Watford game, to please drop off any items that can go some way to helping those young people have a happier festive period.”

Fans can drop off their items to the foodbank in the fan zone in the run up to and before Saturday’s home match against Watford.

Collect points are also located at the Stadium of Light and Black Cats House reception, from 9am – 5pm until Monday 19 December.

The food items required include:

-          Dry products, such as rice, mashed potato and pasta

-          Tinned products, such as meats, pies, stews, chilli, tuna, vegetables, beans, spaghetti and soup

-          Packet products, such as breakfast cereals, biscuits, long life milk, long life fruit juice, sugar and teabags
