Charity receives backing from FA fund.

Sunderland AFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light, has received a boost from The FA’s 2013 Community Shield Fund.

The Community Shield, formerly known as the Charity Shield, is played on the weekend before the commencement of the Premier League season and is contested by the Premier League title holders and winners of the FA Cup - 2013’s game featured Manchester United and Wigan.

The 124 football clubs that participated from First Round Proper of the FA Cup with Budweiser are all eligible to receive funding for their nominated charities and SAFC’s Foundation of Light are set to use their  portion of the money generated by the game to help fund their Kicks programme in Seaburn, Sunderland.

The aim of the Kicks programme is to provide a range of sport related activities for 13 to 19-year-olds to develop young people’s potential. The project has achieved impressive results in the North East to date in reducing anti-social behaviour and crime, along with teaching youngsters valuable life skills and increasing their confidence.

Foundation of Light CEO, Lesley Spuhler, said: “We are very grateful to The FA for their donation through the Community Shield Fund. Every donation the Foundation of Light receives goes right to the heart of the communities we work in.

“Whether large or small, every donation is vitally important in helping us to work with communities and individuals most in need across the North East.

“The Kicks programme has been a tremendous success and has had a hugely positive impact on the lives of the young people we worked with and this donation will help us to continue that great work.”
