Charity showcase on Saturday

Special Foundation matchday at the SoL.

Sunderland AFC take on reigning Barclays Premier League Champions Manchester United on Saturday and the mouth-watering clash is set to provide the club’s charity, Foundation of Light, with a massive boost.

The game has been designated as Foundation Day, with Sunderland’s players sporting special shirts bearing the Foundation’s logo to highlight the ground-breaking work of the charity.

Following the match, these shirts will be signed by the players and auctioned via eBay, to help raise money for the charity’s wide range of education, sports, health and community engagement programmes, which benefit more than 42,000 people across the North East every year.

A number of the Foundation's beneficiaries will also take part in a special parade around the Stadium of Light pitch prior to Saturday’s game, and a variety of activities will be demonstrated on the pitch at half time to further showcase the charity’s wide-reaching work.

Margaret Byrne, Sunderland AFC CEO, said: “Everyone at the football club is extremely proud of the work undertaken by the Foundation of Light and we are delighted to be able to give them the opportunity to showcase this valuable work to a worldwide audience at Saturday’s game.”

The Foundation of Light, which launched in 2001, is financially independent of the football club and relies on fundraising for more than 90 per cent of its project costs.

This weekend’s league-tie between SAFC and Man United, which kicks off at 5.30pm, will also serve as the official launch of the charity’s new Friends of the Foundation scheme, which has been designed to further boost this fundraising and encourage community involvement.

As part of the scheme, which costs £10 to join, supporters will receive automatic entry into regular prize draws to win signed SAFC items and match tickets, as well as discounts to selected Foundation of Light events and sports coaching courses.

Lesley Spuhler, CEO at the Foundation of Light, said: “Fundraising is vitally important to the Foundation of Light, with schemes like Friends of the Foundation allowing us to continue our work supporting families and individuals across the North East,

“Being able to launch this scheme and engage with the fans at SAFC’s forthcoming match with Manchester United is a great opportunity for us and I would like to thank everyone at SAFC for their on-going support.”
