Former midfielder passes away

Club sad to hear of former midfielder’s passing.

Sunderland AFC is saddened at the news that former midfielder Mick Buckley has died at the age of 59.

Buckley, who made 121 appearances for the Black Cats between 1978 and 1983, passed away after a long illness.

Manchester-born Buckley started his career with Everton in 1971, after seven years at Goodison Park he made the move to Sunderland for a transfer fee of £80,000.

He made his Sunderland debut in September 1978 in a win against Preston North End at Roker Park.

The England youth team international went on to have spells with fellow north east clubs Hartlepool United, Carlisle United and Middlesbrough after leaving Sunderland in 1983.

Sunderland AFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “The club is saddened by the news of Mick's death and would like to pass on its condolences to his family."
