Club chaplain reflects on famous meeting with the Pope.

Sunderland's club chaplain, Fr Marc Lyden-Smith, hit the headlines last week when he presented the Pope with a Sunderland shirt.

Pope Francis - the leader of more than 1bn Catholics worldwide - posed with the shirt after Fr Marc was selected for a special meeting.

“I was going on a pilgrimage with a group from the north east in October, so I contacted the Vatican because I knew the Pope is a huge football fan," he said.

“I asked if there was a chance I could present him with a Sunderland shirt, and they got back in touch and said they didn’t know.

“They told me I could have a ticket to the general audience, that I’d have a good seat and that if the Pope wanted to come over he would.

“Thank God he did come over and I was able to meet him.”

The rest is histor, and Father Marc couldn't believe the response his photo received as it quickly went viral on Twitter.
