‘I never get bored of talking about it!’

Exactly 50 years ago to the day Nick Sharkey wrote his name in Wearside folklore with five goals in a 7-1 win over Norwich.

Then it dawned on me each player had a £1,000 win bonus in their contract, everyone except me, so they were all £1,000 richer and all I got was the match ball!

The affable Scot enjoyed reflecting on the accomplishment in his visit to the Black Cats bar for a pre-match talk-in this past weekend.

“I never get bored of talking about it,” Sharkey quipped.

“I can remember it like it was yesterday; how each goal went in and the reception I received from the 40,000 plus crowd – great memories!”

Sharkey, who made over 100 appearances for Sunderland between 1959 and 1976, told the gathered crowd about the celebrations in the dressing room once the players left the pitch.

“The team were going mad, I was sitting in the bath and had everyone coming over and patting me on the back and I thought this is great they’re really pleased for me.

“Then it dawned on me each player had a £1,000 win bonus in their contract, everyone except me,  so they were all £1,000 richer and all I got was the match ball!

“I’ve still got that now – I bet they can’t say the same about their bonus,” he joked.

The 69 year-old now chairs the SAFC Former Players Association and plays a vital role in supporting ex-pros and raising funds.

“We have some great get-togethers, there’s always anecdotes flying around between former players, they’re always fun occasions.”
