Ladies FA Cup Third Round

Sunderland’s ladies progressed to the fourth round of the Ladies FA Cup in comfortable fashion with a 6-1 victory over Wear-Tees rivals Middlesbrough.

Keira Ramshaw’s hat-trick was a particular highlight at Thornaby FC whilst goals from Beth Mead, Natalie Gutteridge and Becky Salicki confirmed the visitors’ superiority.

The Black Cats were dominant throughout and started brightly with Ramshaw and Gutteridge linking up well in the early stages.

It was Mead who broke the deadlock though; she latched onto Sophie Williams’ pass before bravely lifting the ball over Laura Wilson in the Middlesbrough goal.

It took just eight minutes for Sunderland to double their lead, this time Rachel Furness was the provider and Ramshaw struck home powerfully.

The game was put beyond all doubt just after the hour mark as Williams crossed for Ramshaw to grab her second with a bullet header into the roof of the net.

A further ten minutes of Black Cats domination passed before Gutteridge bundled Williams’ corner home to make it 4-0.

A rare Boro attack looked to give the score more respectability as Jenny Dixon poked home when Sunderland failed to clear their lines.

The visitors replied immediately though, and from the resulting kick-off Ramshaw secured her hat-trick with a wonderful turn and strike from the edge of the area.

Sunderland heaped more misery on their rivals in the closing stages as Sailicki was brought down unfairly inside the area before picking herself up to convert the spot-kick past Wilson.
