Defender is spot on in Black Cats Bar.
Former SAFC defender John MacPhail was in the hot seat ahead of Sunderland’s win over Wigan when we visited the Black Cats Bar.
MacPhail, who made a name for himself on Wearside for his ability to convert a penalty, was this week’s guest for the pre-match question and answer session.
During his time at Roker Park, MacPhail made over 150 appearances and notched 22 goals. Sixteen of those came in his first season with the club, the Third Division championship-winning campaign and a remarkable 10 of those goals were scored from the penalty spot!
MacPhail spoke about his move to Sunderland from Bristol City and how he achieved his ambition of playing top-flight football with Sunderland – even if it was just one game.
He also said playing alongside Gary Bennett and Eric Gates was a career highlight for him; however, his favourite memory of his time in a red and white shirt was his maiden season, where the team gained promotion to Division Two in emphatic style with a prolific scoring record of 92 goals.
The talk-ins are part of Black Cats Bar matchdays, where fans can enjoy a complimentary dish of the day, free matchday programme and take advantage of various drinks offers.
