Spin-off company team up with Newcastle Pride festival.
Sunderland AFC's spin-off operation, 1879 Events Management, has delivered its biggest off-site event since the subsidiary organisation was launched several months ago, providing catering and bars for the 2012 Newcastle Pride Festival.
Over 20,000 attended what was the biggest Pride event to ever take place in the city of Newcastle. Exhibition Park played host to the festival, which showcased a mixture of entertainment, live music, market stalls and more.
Embracing the event theme of the Mad Hatters' tea party, 1879 Events offered a bespoke service, providing all of the on-site catering and bars, featuring everything from a Pimms bus, beer buggies, Champagne bar and a range of food including gourmet burgers, sandwiches and cup cakes.
Peter Darrant, chairman of Northern Pride said: "We are delighted with how the partnership between Northern Pride Events Ltd and 1879 worked this year.
"Newcastle Pride was the biggest free LGBT event the North East has ever seen. Brilliant weather and a fantastic line up of free entertainment attracted record crowds, over 20,000 in the park, for a day of celebration.
"1879 and Sunderland AFC rose to the challenge with a diverse offer and a commitment to support the event. We couldn't have asked for a better partner and look forward to working with what proved to be a fantastic team of people over the coming years."
Over 100 1879 staff were involved in the delivery of the event, overcoming the challenge of a change to the festival venue only five days before it was due to pen, due to bad weather.
SAFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson added: "Newcastle Pride is a fantastic festival and something that we at SAFC and 1879 Events are hugely proud to be associated with. Our involvement was not just about delivering a commercial service, it was about showing support for an event that celebrates and triumphs inclusivity, a core value that we embrace wholeheartedly."
"From our perspective the event proved to be a tremendous success and one which we were delighted to be asked to get involved in."
1879 Events Management employs over 300 people and is fully owned and operated by Sunderland Football Club. The subsidiary - which was created by transferring existing SAFC staff to 1879 - has also taken over the catering contract for events held within Sunderland's Stadium of Light. The fact that the SAFC team is running 1879 will ensure that the same level of service and delivery on offer at the Stadium of Light is replicated off-site.
This expertise, and the club's reputation for offering the highest possible standard of event planning, management and delivery, means that launching 1879 Event Management was a natural progression.
1879 delivers a range of services, from event management to catering and works on major events and conferences as well as smaller functions.
