U23s match preview: Dickman inspired by cup progression

Elliott Dickman has called for more of the same when Sunderland under-23s host Manchester United at Eppleton Colliery Welfare tonight, KO 7pm.

Two games in four days last week saw the Black Cats advance to the last 16 stage of the Premier League Cup as Group B winners.

An afternoon to forget was endured at the start of the week as Burnley produced a ruthless display to win 5-3.

But the Lads responded with defiance on Thursday, defeating Blackburn Rovers courtesy of Josh Maja’s first-half goal.

This week, however, poses a different kind of challenge for the Development squad. . .

Still without a win in the league in 2017, Dickman has told safc.com his players will need to pick up where they left off on Thursday if they’re to end that hoodoo.

“Everyone to a man stuck to their jobs at Blackburn Rovers,” he said.

“The lads stuck to their tasks and did really well so from a team’s point of view I thought they did great.

“The pleasing thing was that there was a response from last Monday’s match at Burnley – that needs to continue against Manchester United though.

“We played some great football against Blackburn as well and that’s important to note,” he continued.

“Most importantly though we stuck at it in amongst all the hustle and bustle in conditions that weren’t particularly great.”
