Elliott Dickman: It is a great achievement for the club

Elliott Dickman hailed the endeavour and commitment of his players after they produced a heroic display against Norwich City to advance into the Premier League International Cup final.

Joel Asoro scored the game’s only goal with just 13 minutes on the clock, incisively slotting the ball past Aston Oxborough as he strode through on goal.

The Canaries hit back, though, but came up against a stubborn Max Stryjek who produced a sumptuous penalty stop to prevent Glenn Middleton levelling the tie.

It was a match-defining save which really epitomised the Black Cats’ performance as it highlighted their endeavour to dig deep and really grafted for every ball in what proved to be a fairly scrappy affair at Carrow Road.

Asoro was denied on two further occasions by big saves from Oxborough at the other end before Lynden Gooch left the bar rattling.

Norwich came on strong in the final 20 minutes, but came up against a determined Pole who made save after save to see Sunderland advance to the final.

Speaking post-match Dickman delivered a delighted verdict.

“The players have done smashing tonight because it was a real battle,” he smiled.

“We showed a lot of the ugly side which is something we have questioned the lads on over the years and definitely a lot this season.

“To be fair to the boys they did themselves justice tonight and really dug deep when it mattered the most to help get us through.

“It is a great achievement for Sunderland Football Club and the Academy,” he continued.

“There are a lot of staff who have put a lot work in over the years and they all need a massive pat on the back.

“Ultimately, though, the players have done it and they are the ones who have worked hard, stuck to a game plan and given everything they have got.”
