Cup progress: Storey eyes Wear-Tyne victory in FA Youth Cup

Alex Storey is primed for Sunderland under-18s’ biggest game of the season, admitting victory is the only option against Newcastle United.

The young Black Cats host their Wear-Tyne rivals at Eppleton Colliery Welfare tonight, kick-off 7pm, with a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup up for grabs.

While Elliott Dickman’s side have endured a challenging U18 Premier League campaign so far, the youth team have enjoyed a bright cup run with impressive victories over Burton Albion and Shrewsbury Town under their wings.

Speaking to safc.com, the central defender has hailed the importance of victory, insisting there is no other acceptable alternative.

“It’s the biggest game of the season because we all know what it means to everyone here and from their side as well,” he said.

“It’s all about the result, especially as it’s a cup match and the winner goes through.

“There’s a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs and we know we need to get a result.

“It has been quite a few years since we have done well in the cup.

“We haven’t done too well in the league this season but we want to prove that we are a good team,” he continued.

“We want to do everything we can to show that on Wednesday evening and make people proud.”
