Preview: Welsh relishing physical battle

Andy Welsh believes Sunderland under-23s are in for a physically tough battle when they go up against Everton in the Premier League 2 tonight, KO 7pm.

The young Black Cats head to Goodison Park undefeated after three league games which includes victories over Leicester City and Southampton.

While league-leaders Everton pose a possible stumbling block, following a 100% start to the season, Welsh believes his young guns have begun the season in fine fettle and has urged his team to build on their strong start.

“The young lads did well in their last match against Rochdale and it was a very high tempo game,” he said.

“We passed the ball well at times and created some good chances but they came on a bit stronger and made it incredibly tough.

“We go to Everton now and we know what to expect because they always pose a very difficult battle to overcome.

“They have started the season really well, been strong and worked incredibly hard so we know exactly what’s going to stand in front of us.

“We have started well this season and it’s important we continue to work in the same way we have done over the last few games, continue to display our qualities and hopefully we can get another result.”
